What does living an authentic life mean?

Without anything or anyone to guide you, making decisions can be difficult and complex. In the absence of a solid foundation, you can become confused and overthink things. You can also make choices based on what others believe you "should" do. Decisions you make can either move you closer to or further away from what you value.

Oftentimes, there’s a payoff for making choices based on what you "should" be doing rather than your values, even if those choices are out of alignment with the values you hold dear. Stress or illness may begin to manifest in your body. The result could be fatigue, restlessness, anxiety, boredom, or resentful feelings. Moreover, your life may seem to be lacking something.

Our perception of our authenticity plays a critical role in who we are. Our enjoyment of life is influenced both by our judgments and behaviours as well as by our pleasure from our experiences. Authenticity is important to children from an early age, as they learn to cherish originals more than copies. (Newman, 2018)

Authenticity can greatly influence our judgment of the value of everyday and expensive objects such as designer watches, specialty coffees, and chipped mugs. To live authentically, one must understand what it means to be authentic.

The person who lives authentically exists "moving moment by moment, acknowledging their responsibility and choice, while understanding their motivation, defences, and conditions of worth" (Joseph, 2019). Some essential components of an authentic life are following our passion and being in touch with our natural abilities, strengths, and talents.

What are the steps to living an authentic life?

Whenever you try something new in your life, it's always advisable to begin with small steps:

  1. Keeping a gratitude journal will help you identify what already exists in your life that feels right so that you can start attracting the same.

  2. Meditating allows you to envision the ideal life you would like to live. Making steps towards your ideal life can only be done when you have a clear picture of what you want.

  3. Creating a list of all the activities you enjoyed as a child might provide some interesting clues for you.

  4. If you would like assistance on this journey, consider hiring a life coach. It is possible to discover who you really are and what you really want in life with the help of a qualified life coach like Leigh Stafford.

Most people seek a life coach because their lives aren't going in the direction they want or because they don't feel the way they hope to or want to.
