Limiting beliefs can hinder your personal development in more ways than one. So what can you do about it?

“The only thing that’s keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself.” – Tony Robbins

The mind is a powerful tool. And how we use our minds ultimately creates the majority of our life outcomes. Many of us go through our lives constantly striving to do better in both our personal and professional spheres.

The problem here is that if you don’t recognise the power of your mentality and beliefs in your personal development, you won’t get very far.

If you have even been unable to reach a goal that you have set for yourself, then limiting beliefs could have played an important part in why the goal wasn’t achieved.

So what are limiting beliefs?

Limiting beliefs are thoughts and opinions that you believe to be the absolute truth. They tend to have negative connotations attached to them, that hinders your life and stop you from moving forward and growing personally. Often these thoughts are unconscious and are a result of trying to avoid failure or negative outcomes by telling yourself that you can’t or shouldn’t try, because it will only end in failure.

These limiting beliefs can stem from many places, sometimes from past experiences, or your surrounding environments. Ultimately your subconscious will attempt to help you avoid a negative outcome by altering your behaviour, often to become risk-averse.

Limiting beliefs hinder your personal development, as they don’t allow you to reach your full potential by blocking your ability to take risks and pursue challenging goals.

The issue with limiting beliefs is that because they are subconscious, you first must be aware of them in order to overcome them. Awareness is the first step, after that, you will need to consciously change your behaviour.

In order to identify and change those beliefs, you need to work on your self-awareness, while also being accountable and taking responsibility for the beliefs that you created for yourself. If you get into the habit of recognising when a limiting belief is hindering your personal development, you will then have the ability to reframe it, and change, in order to move forward.

This might seem like a frightening concept, and if it does, you might be experiencing limiting beliefs while reading this. The change must start with you and embracing the change will not only positively impact you, but others in your life.

However, you don’t have to do this all on your own, you can go through it with the help of a personal development coach, or a life coaching program. Personal and life coaching can assist with your personal development by creating a mindset that allows you to avoid limiting beliefs and change your thought patterns completely to reach your full potential.
